4 Reasons why people are refusing to return to work
We’ve all seen it. ‘Help Wanted’ signs, long waits, and desperate attempts at hiring are all indicative of the current job market. Pundits, executives, and common people alike throw around the phrase “nobody wants to work anymore”. So why are workers leaving now, when the economy is supposed to be recovering? The truth is, if life before the pandemic was sustainable, people would rush back to it. The pandemic has revealed the problems with the job market and given workers an opportunity to pick their best option.
Leverage
The main reason workers are leaving entry-level jobs is because they have the leverage to do so. Workers are, in effect, bargaining for better wages and benefits. Opportunities like these are rare in the United States. One of the biggest providers of entry-level jobs (Amazon) shut down an attempt to create a Union there. Similar anti-union actions and sentiments run rampant in the US. Usually, entry-level workers are in a disadvantageous position. The American government does not adjust the minimum wage for inflation. There is also a lot of competition for jobs like these because the requirements are low compared to the rest of the job market.
